Lake Oswego AAUW Branch Scholarship Fund
Lake Oswego AAUW Branch and Portland Community College Foundation believe that all community members should have access to a high quality education and the support needed to succeed. Your participation in this effort will change the trajectory of student lives and give them the confidence they need to find success in the classroom and beyond. The scholarship at PCC is for students in the Early Childhood Education Program.
The choice of awarding scholarships to Early Childhood Education students is twofold.
- There is a dearth of qualified persons in this field throughout the United States. If women are to return to work after childbirth, they need to know that their children will be spending time in an environment that promotes learning.
- The average starting wage for Early Childhood Educators in Clackamas County is $39,340. The average monthly payment for $20,000 in student loans (10 years at 5%) is $212. The financial burden may lead some students to decide on another field.
Opportunities for professional development and college credits are particularly needed for linguistically diverse providers in order to better meet the needs of traditionally underserved young children and their families. Investing through scholarships for an early childhood student is ultimately an investment in the individual, families of young children, the greater community, and the adults of the future.
Research has shown that when early learning teachers have professional certificates and related degrees, the children in their care benefit directly. Children have increased outcomes on academic measures such as language, literacy, and math as well as social-emotional benefits including improved self-regulation and problem-solving.
